Nether Stewarton Farm, Peebles, Scottish Borders

In early 2022, Agriforest were approached about harvesting a small mixed woodland strip directly next to farm buildings. The trees were over mature, with several having shed limbs recently.

Due to the size of the trees careful planning was required to enable safe felling for neighbouring property and needless to say the operators too. A small strip of Sitka Spruce was felled first, followed by the larger broadleaved trees. Due to the close proximity of the trees to an access track, only one machine was required for the whole process - one of Agriforest's two Doosan forestry excavators with a hydraulic grab worked alongside a team of two chainsaw operators for one week to complete the work which included sorting through felled material and stacking the timber at roadside.

Timber was sorted into four different sizes or 'products' and sold to different buyers meaning the best possible financial return was achieved for the owner. Branches were rowed up post felling and timber extraction, and a mulcher was brought in to mulch all residue leaving the site in a tidy state ready for replanting this winter 2022/2023. Agriforest will also be carrying out the replanting which will be a mix of native broadleaved trees.

  • Operation - clear fell of small mixed woodland

  • Size of site - 0.34 hectares

  • Overall timber volume harvested, forwarded to roadside and sold to market - 183 tonnes
